I agree the grounds are not what I do, I leave as much copper on the board as I can as a ground plane if it has a break I tend to link it with a thick link. It also makes etching faster here you can see my board for a web server it is single sided and all the wide runs are ground and +12, +5 & +3.3 you can see the wide ground going down to the CPU and ENC28J60.
Why not try taking out the 7805 and running the board off 4.5v battery and see how it goes this will eliminate the regulator
