For faster (100Khz~400khz) i2c bus you need strong pull ups to get a fast rise time else it won't work, the pull ups will consume a lot power during communication on the i2c bus and you still have low datarate. Spi is driven by pushpull and consumes therefore less power for considerable higher datarate. Depending of your cpu clock you can get several Mhz datarate, and how shorter the data transfer takes how less power used. There was some interesting link with a good explanation about the power consumption of i2c and spi bus, will look tomorrow if i can find the link again.
