which you quoted also allows to detect non-standard baud rates. It would need some code mods to do this, but the measurement of the bit time from which the baud rate is calculated is already done. This method does not rely on sending any special character. Any serial stream will work, ( almost ) regardless of what it contains.
But it is true that if the old device only uses one rate, then a one-off measurement of the rate just by measuring the bit time with an oscilloscope is usually easier. Baud rate is just 1/bit time in seconds.
