With multiplexing what you do is to use one more line for each display from another port to turn on that seven segment display so you first output the value to the port to display the number then turn on the one you want to light up with that digit when you do this very quickly your eye can not tell the difference so you see them all on with two or more digits so in its basic form you will need one more bit from another port per digit.
