You fixed it, using a relay. But the problem has not been solved.
Blaming the display is too easy: I have the same display, and it's not the cause.
But okay, you don't get more time to dig this one out. That's life, these days.
How long are the wires between AVR and display ? Did you give the display it's own decoupling capacitor ?
