bascom will always check the chip ID before it will program the processor. This is done because :
- the chip ID will tell the programmer how big the memory is
- the ID will tell the programmer about the fuse bytes which varies from chip to chip
- more important : it will protect you for writing the wrong firmware to a chip. you can look for ages for a problem when $regfile= "m88def.dat" is programmed into a Mega128.
When you use auto program (F4) you do not need to worry, it will identify as part of the programming procedure.
