Six1 what I was thinking was that the buttons get their name and the data they send from a setup file eg
Button:1,Up,up
Button:2,Down,dn
Button:3,Set-Amps,sa
So for button two your program reads the file, fills in a text box with the button name "Down" and when you press the button it sends "dn" via the rs232 its then up to the AVR to do something with it.
Also the program could watch the serial port and the AVR could periodically send the LCD data to it which it then displays.
The other function you mentioned would also be good.
Deanus the power supplies I am working on are 3 x 20amp linear units that Jaycar had for $20ea I am re-building them as they had not enough cooling ,were fixed voltage and strange circuit. One will have a 4 digit amp meter and volt meter, another with 128 x 64 display for all readings and the other is using the 32 x 8 , 4 character display the last two will have infra-red remotes as well, they all will be variable the two with AVRs will also have a 5v dc output as there are two 3 volt windings on the transformer and two 17 volt ones as I said strange circuit.
Here is the 32 x 8 http://www.mcselec.com/index2.php?option=com_forum&Itemid=59&page=viewtopic&t=11638
