If you are limited to a specific board then the above post applies.
If multitasking is required, a second or more MCUs would do the job.
In one of my projects are 7 and increasing MCUs (mixed Atmega and Xmega) connected to each other via SPI, TWI, RS232 and parallel. Each MCU is doing something different.
The 168 is fairly small but can do a lot of things and I use it a lot because it tolerates overclocking and
with lower voltage, interfaces well wit Xmega.
