Aplication note AN #196 is exactly what you want but it uses a pre-made module with a Mega8 to which you add a real time clock module RX8025, infra-red receiver and remote control. You can see it develop here http://www.mcselec.com/index2.php?option=com_forum&Itemid=59&page=viewtopic&t=10696 Note the RX8025 is a good choice for a RTC as it has its own crystal and is factory calibrated.
If you have the tools to remove the mega8 surface mount (you can get a re-work station for around $US 70 as I did) you can replace it with a mega328 then add more things to its abilities eg. use an ENC28J60 and it can get the exact time from the Internet time servers the code for this is in the blog section of the forum. If you have a look at my posts in the blog section many of them have clocks
