Yes is notice the Tiny1232 is fine but in my case I need / prever to sense the 2 encoder lines by interrupt inputs and in this case it is the new software i2c lines .
So back to the drawing board.
All the chip need to do is be a i2c quad encoder interface .
The tiny45 at least has some sort of i2c / TWI hardware support - half the work done .
Not a problem to use any other chip - I just want to get the job done with the minimum silicon and wires .
Clock speed might also be a bit of a problem - so a faster cpu might also be better for that reason.
The count will normally only be read when the encoder is not ( slow ) moving .
